Barcodes emerged in the 1960’s, primarily in industrial settings, and by the 1970’s they had been standardized and started showing up in more and more commercial applications. Today barcodes are everywhere. They enable quick and precise identification in nearly all types of business. The beauty of the barcode lies in its simplicity, its strength lies in its flexibility.

There are two main reasons why barcoding for inventory applications is beneficial

Productivity

Accuracy

With today’s smaller profit margins and competitive markets, inventory control is not an option. Simply put a warehouse must receive inventory and ship items efficiently. If there is a lapse in any of these steps problems are often compounded before they are corrected. Shipping costs, labor spent correcting the problem, additional shipping, customer dissatisfaction are all additional costs that can be avoided through proper inventory management using barcodes. Paper tracking is time consuming, manually entering inventory numbers on paper – often times on many pieces of paper. Scanning a barcode is quick, and can be relayed from one form to another electronically; reducing the administrative time it takes to track the item which will probably be keyed into a database system anyway. Scanning into inventory and moving it through the process of inventory to shipping to invoicing as well as ordering replacement inventory can be automated, saving time and reducing errors. This also allows you to “see” your inventory and know exactly what is where. Barcodes are accurate, much more so than even the most conscientious worker and accuracy is enhanced by positive product identification. Items cannot be misidentified by workers or customers, reducing the risk of inventory shrink and tag swapping. Whenever there is a need to accurately identify or track something, bar-coding should be used.

With today’s low cost units to both print and read barcode labels there is seemingly no reason for businesses to not use the technology. Time savings and increased accuracy, tracking and data sharing capabilities, visible inventory and reduced shrinkage provide a strong case that it can cost businesses for not using it.

August 29, 2005 is a day that will be remembered forever. This was the day that Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast region and changed the lives of many people forever.

The Mississippi Alternative Housing Program was developed after FEMA awarded $281M to the State of Mississippi to fund moving the Katrina victims into more sustainable housing. MobileFrame is proud to have played a key role in the success of the program, which is the most successful out of all of the states funded. PBS&J combined MobileFrame’s Configurable Mobile Application™ Platform and the Intermec CN3 device to collect data, electronically automating the entire data collection process.

PBS & J previously collected data on paper forms, but the forms constantly changed and they had the normal human transcription errors that are associated with manual data collection processes. Prior to MobileFrame, their manual process resulted in only 60-70% data accuracy despite their best efforts. Due to the MobileFrame software’s ease of use, PBS & J were able to quickly deploy both site inspection and work order applications built around their own unique requirements with no programming required. The applications allow them to capture GPS coordinates, digital signatures, photos of damage and sketches pertinent to the record. Now that they have this electronic solution implemented, PBS & J was able to eliminate the manual paper based process and simultaneously achieve close to 100% accuracy.

“MobileFrame’s solution has been a great benefit to our company and this program. Deploying technology to solve problems like this is imperative to the growth of our organization. MobileFrame is the software platform that we continue to use to improve our processes.” Joe Lambrix – Project Manager, PBS&J

Without using MobileFrame’s advanced 100% Code Free Platform it would have taken several weeks longer to set-up the program, which would have left Hurricane Katrina victims waiting much longer for their homes.

Denny Norman VP of Corporate performance for Miller Pipeline spoke about his organization and how they were able to harness the power of MobileFrame to enable their organization to realize incredible productivity gains.
Here are a couple of quotes from Denny’s presentation at the Webinar.

•	“We have never had a synchronization problem or lost one single character of data”
•	“We didn’t want to contract or buy a software platform that we would get nickel and dimed on. MobileFrame was the only vendor that didn’t have any additional costs”
•	“We have automated over 200 unique 5 part forms in just over 18 months”
•	“Integration was very smooth with our AS400 System”
•	“We have 100% billing accuracy, which is unbelievable”
