Accidents Happen

12 13 2011 10 39 45 AM Accidents HappenAccidents happen.  Mobile devices get lost, stolen and broken; it’s just a fact of life.  With as much as we rely on these devices, these accidents can grind production to a halt.  Not only is there a security risk, but now there is also the matter of installing the software on a new device and all the configuration needed to set it up.

MobileFrame‘s built-in Mobile Device Management (MDM) is designed to help in these instances.  Since the MobileFrame application is not hard-coded on the device you can quickly and easily change from one device to another.  Just install the client on a new device and you are back up and running, with barely skipping a beat.   And as far as security, you can force logoff, requiring password authentication to log back in.

With more organizations looking for field service applications to streamline operations, it is no surprise that we have seen an increase in the number of mobile software vendors within the marketplace. Please take a few minutes to learn 5 things you should know before you select a mobile software vendor.

  1. Proven – Be weary of solutions that have just been released and companies that have just opened their doors. Unfortunately many vendors have gone to market with solutions that have not been properly tested, documented and de-bugged. This can result in problems building your application, training your team, getting support and downtime out in the field.
  2. Configuration – Make sure that the vendor’s solution can be configured by a member of your team on a moment’s notice without the need to write any code. It is also important that you have the means to deploy these changes automatically without the need to impact mobile workers, or uninstall and re-install the solution.

I was chatting with one of our valued partners today, and we got into a very interesting discussion regarding the adoption of field based mobile computing. It appears as if we have both stumbled upon the same problem. The apparent disconnect between automating office based paper processes, and field based paper processes. This discussion really made me think.

“Why don’t businesses value mobile computing like they value office based computing?”

For years companies have been using computers in the office to aid in the functions necessary to run the daily operations of the business.

For Example:

  • Bookkeeping / Accounting
  • AR / AP
  • Payroll
  • E-mail
  • Customer Activity Tracking
  • Sales Performance Tracking
  • Resource Scheduling
  • Creating, assigning, and closing Work Orders
  • Ordering Parts
  • Updating Spreadsheets
  • Etc.
